Company History
Washington Tool and Machine Co. began as a garage shop producing small parts for the US military during WWII. With a bench lathe and a drill press, Howard Patterson was able to deliver on time and with a precision that aided the war effort. Post war expansion led to incorporation as Washington Tool and Machine Co. Inc, in 1957. An expanding base of satisfied customers supported the addition of precise machine tools and skilled machinists as WTM supplied a wide variety of parts to a number of firms, notably those in gear manufacturing, energy, and general machine and fabrication industries.
In the 1970’s, the company fabricated and/or machined a wide range of products for several steel rolling mill customers throughout the area. Parts became larger and heavier as the tolerances became smaller and tighter. The 1985 move into our present 130,000 square foot facility was necessitated by the demand for more machining space and higher capacity cranes. The acquisition of a new NC lathe and NC mill greatly expanded our capabilities, and set the stage for an expansion in roll turning services that included the purchase of our first CNC lathe. Complete machining services were offered beginning in the early 1990’s with the addition of first operation turning equipment, milling machines, precision roll grinders, as well as a host of inspection services.
WTM is equipped for the needs of the steel ring industry, with the ability to turn both small and large ring type parts. The number of vertical boring mills increased in response to customer demand through the 1990’s, and today is one of the largest in the region. Our impressive inventory of machine tools allows for quick turn around on order quantity and size variation (from 4” to 120”).
